November 2017

Dear Families,

Thank you to all of the PTSA members for the support and patience as I settled into my new role as president!

November may seem a little late for a back to school message from your PTSA president, but it turns out to be a great time because I’ve got my feet wet working with our state PTSA and with so many of our wonderful volunteers and committee members.

For those of you who I have not yet met—  I invite you to stop by our next meeting and say hello.

As a Robinson graduate (Class of ’89), I am proud to serve the Robinson community in many ways- including as the new PTSA President. As a parent of a rising Robinson senior, I have told my son many times - you have to get involved!  I bet you have said the same to your kids, right? I truly believe that it starts with us modeling that behavior.

For me, PTSA is one of the most fun ways to get involved.  We meet once a month (usually the first Tuesday) at 7 pm in the Principal's meeting room.  I invite you to join us - you can even encourage your student to come. I am pretty confident that once you get a feel for the comradery, you will want to keep coming!  You are welcome just to listen or to participate... maybe even volunteer for one of our committees.    Robinson is a giant school, but somehow it has succeeded in becoming a small community for our family, and I hope you feel the same.

The PTSA has many things to offer in support of our students and school programs-and we are successful because of your membership support, volunteers and the generosity of our community during fundraising events and donations to scholarships. Thank you for being a part of it all!

As November begins, we are launching our special Sponsor A Teacher Membership Drive. Our goal is to have all teachers and faculty memberships sponsored to show them how much we care and appreciate their work.  Teacher Memberships are just $5! You can sponsor as many as you like and name the teachers or let us share where they are needed.  All memberships and Teacher sponsorship received in November will be included in a drawing for a special membership raffles.  I happen to know that there are some pretty great prizes (GMU basketball fabulous seats)! Thanks for your participation!

One of my favorite Robinson PTSA events that we run every year is the Robinson Marketplace –this year on November 11th.  If you are not familiar, it is a Holiday Shopping Event that you shouldn't miss!  There are over 70 unique vendors offering great variety for Holiday Shopping from Robinson gear to hand-made crafts to local businesses to ... well, you name it!  Parking and entry are free - there are even some great food vendors!  This year, there will even be a blood drive on site!  One of my favorite parts is the Raffle and silent auction. You don't even have to be present to win.  You can buy your raffle tickets online or in person. It is a great way to support the school AND get some pretty cool stuff.

Lastly, I was asked to introduce myself and share my background with you. I graduated from Robinson in 1989 and went on to graduate from George Mason University.  As a military brat, we moved a lot, but when we arrived in Fairfax, it just stuck! I live in Burke with my husband, Brandon, my son, Nate (the Junior) and daughter, Hannah who is very excited to start 7th grade at Robinson next year.  I am the Senior Vice President of Contracts for Engineering Services Network, Inc. I have been in various PTA board positions for 10 of the last 12 years at Robinson and Fairview. I have been a Girl Scout leader for 12 years and an active member for 25 years! My favorite past time is watching my kids play sports.  So, whether you see me at a field or a meeting, please feel free to come up and say, "Hello!" or ask a question - I can probably help or at least help steer you in the right direction.

Sincerely,

Shelley Smith
